This type of unacceptance can be seen within certain religions; one example is the Roman Catholic Church. They believe that if an individual accepts the teachings of their church then they believe that, “gender reassignment surgery (GRS) and hormone treatments distort the God-designed and God-created human body to the extent that it is a very serious sin,” (7). Even if gender reassignment surgery would result in less suicides in the long-term it is still viewed as morally evil act (7). The Roman Catholic Church does believe that there is one way to solve this problem, which is confession (7). A transgendered person could undergo the surgery, and then, “confess their sin to a priest with genuine sorrow during the sacrament of penance,” (7). They would be forgiven for their sins, but unfortunately it would be likely that they would be required to stop any hormones they may be taking as well (7).

 

There are however several Christian denominations that welcome transgendered individuals. This includes the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC), United Church of Christ (UCC), Unitarian Universalist Church (UU), and certain congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) (8). The United Church of Christ even encourages their congregations to have explicit welcomes for transgendered persons, and encourages their members to advocate for the civil rights of transgendered people (9).

 

In Islam, they use the term mukhannathun to refer to transgendered women (10). They believe that it is acceptable to be a transgendered women as long as the once the male becomes a women he does not display any sexual interest in women (10). They use this as a treatment for homosexuality, in which the government even partially funds the operations (10). Therefore they appear to be semi-accepting of these individuals. Sophia was still trying to make things work with her wife, and still loved her. Based on this knowledge, she would not be accepted by the religion of Islam. Overall, it is possible that even the religions who are accepting of Sophia, may not be a huge fan of her due to her actions (theft of credit cards), which is viewed as sinful by most.
