Homosexuality in Orange is The New Black

One of the main aspects of this television show is homosexuality. The protagonist Piper is sent to prison based on actions that she had done years before with her girlfriend. She is sent to an all-female institution where there are many lesbian acts occurring. Lesbianism is a huge aspect of this television show between Piper's conflict with her feelings for her male fiancée and old feelings creeping up for her female lover.

Many of the individuals within the show seem supportive of homosexuality. While not all of the characters are not lesbians or are not performing sexual acts with the other women within the prison, most of them are not judgmental of those who are. There are however some characters who are completely against the acts of homosexuality that are happening. A character who openly shows her hatred towards homosexuality is Pennastucky – who will be discussed in detail in a section specifically about her. This is the same for religion, some are supportive and others are against the act.

In regards to religion many people believe that most religions are against homosexuality – Christianity specifically, but that is not necessarily the case. For example, Hinduism does not view homosexuality as a sin in religion (1). Many denominations of Christianity do not view homosexuality negatively either. In 1995, the Alliance of Baptists accepted a report on human sexuality and declared themselves, “a welcoming and affirming group as to sexual orientation." (2) The Roman Catholic Church however views homosexuality not as sinful, but as a “moral evil”, or an “objective disorder”. (3)

Therefore it is possible that this series is seen as offensive to aspects of the religion community. For the individuals who view homosexuality as a sin or wrong this show would not be appropriate. There are various homosexual relationships, sex scenes, and references.

Raw, Real, and Heartbreaking: Sex in "Orange Is the New Black"

This is a video created by the YouTube channel called Slate Video called, "Raw, Real, and Heartbreaking: Sex in 'Orange Is the New Black'". This video outlines the various homosexual relationships within the second season of Orange Is the New Black. An example is how it discusses a "bang off" that occurs between two immates, in which they try to sleep with the most women in the prison.

If you open the video within the actual YouTube website you have access to the comments. Some of the comments are examples of the perceived threat that some religious people believe homosexuality is. One comment in particular states,

"Americans pride themselves on their relationship with GOD everytime you turn around some American is celebrating God. Yet those very same people celebrate homosexuality a direct sin against GOD'S teachings. Orange is the new Black shouldn't be on in a country that claims to love GOD."

This quote demonstrates how certain people who are religious view this series as offensive, and a sin. One of the responses to this comment was,

"Dude calm down. Honestly, I love God, but homosexuality shouldn't be a bad thing. Love is love. Also, this definitely hasn't been the only show to have any kind of sin. And finally, since when is America fully Christian? If you look at the people in this country, you'll see it's very diverse. You can't just get rid of a good show because of something like that."

This is a perfect example of how the view on homosexuality is dependent on the person.

There are some explicit sex scenes in this video. Nudity is censored.
